The government has set the new deadline as December 2026 to finish all four parts of the 153-kilometre-long Chitral-Booni-Mastuj-Shandur Road. This comes at a new delay for a project which has been delayed multiple times.
Official documents show that Rs. 4.20 billion is needed for this project in 2026-27 alone to stay on track towards this goal. The total amount collected so far is The construction phase is already completed with 6.59 billion spent.
This road leads to Chitral from Shandur via Pret, Booni, Mastuj and Shaidas. It was federalized back in May 2020 and officially named as National Highway N-140.
The authorities have divided the project into four packages, each of which covers one segment of the road. Progress has been made in all sections, but has been quite different in each package.
The Chitral-to-Pret section is the most advanced so far with 47.54 percent completion rate. The Pret-to-Booni stretch comes in at 34.77 percent.
The Booni-to-Shaidas section has progressed to 38.16 percent while the last stretch from Shaidas to Shandur is at 29.78 percent. These combine to a project that is very much in the middle.
This road had been planned to be completed sometime between 2023 and 2024. That deadline has come and gone and authorities have moved it to the end of 2026.
