The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has each country get its own calling code and knowing the country code of any country, converting any local number into the international number is a matter of seconds. There is a comprehensive reference table of calling codes by region so that you can easily find out what calling code is valid for any given country.
The E.164 Rule (Applies to Every Country)
No matter what country a number originates from, there are three steps to the conversion:
- Add a plus sign (+) at the beginning.
- Add the country calling code right after the plus sign.
- Take away the local prefix (often a leading 0) from the rest of the number and add the remaining numbers.
The result is recorded as + [Country Code] [National Number] and the full number (country code and national number) can be no longer than 15 digits according to the ITU E.164 standard.
Let’s do a quick worked example: Mobile written locally as 0300 1234567 becomes +923001234567 when sent via a Pakistani mobile.

A Few Regional Quirks Worth Knowing
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP)
It is used by the United States, Canada and most Caribbean countries, which share the same country code of +1, but they use a different three-digit area code. As indicated above, some of the Caribbean countries listed above have two numbers in common (+1) and they have a particular area code (in parentheses) which indicates the country.
Not all countries have a local trunk 0
Some countries do not have a 0 for local calls. For these, step 3 (removing the trunk prefix) is not applicable and you proceed directly to the step of adding the country code.
Subscription numbers vary by length
Subscriber numbers can be different lengths in different countries, and even different lengths from each other in the same country depending on the mobile carrier, so don’t assume that all numbers in a given country will be the same length.

Is there one single format that works for every country?
In fact, the underlying idea is the same in all countries: add plus, the corresponding country calling code (CCC), and then the national number without any local trunk dialling prefixes. Simply the code and number of digits in the subscriber number vary across the countries.
Why do some Caribbean countries share the same country code as the US?
In countries with the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), like the United States, Canada, Jamaica, and several other Caribbean countries, the country code is always +1, followed by a regional code to differentiate between countries and areas.
What if I don’t know a country calling code?
Before entering a phone number in a form or system, refer to a regional table above or an official ITU reference, or use a phone number validator tool to verify the correct code.
Do all countries use a leading 0 that needs to be removed?
No. Most countries who have a local trunk prefix will be preceded by a zero, however this is not always the case. For some numbering systems, there is no trunk prefix at all, so to use it you have to append the country code to the number without removing any numbers first.
