This weekend, Sony Santa Monica Studio announced two big things at San Diego ComicCon. The official release date of God of War: Laufey is now official, and Kratos will be the lead for the game that follows.
God of War: Laufey will be available on PlayStation 5 as well starting on 16/02/2027 only. Creative head Cory Barlog revealed the date in a special panel, as well as game director Ariel Lawrence and the confirmed voice cast.
Cast features Deborah Ann Woll as Laufey, Christopher Judge as Kratos, Jack Quaid as a mysterious cube-shaped creature called Phranque, and Perlina Lau as Rue.
It is a first for the franchise that Laufey is present. It is the first major line-up Game of War where Kratos doesn’t play the lead character and is instead a late Norse wife named Faye and the mother of Atreus.
The story picks up right after her funeral. When Faye wakes up unexpectedly in the Afterlife of the gods, the world of the Everywhen, she finds that the protective plans that she had made for Kratos and Atreus are beginning to unravel.
The game reveal trailer shows Egypt goddess of war, Sekhmet, to be a major antagonist in the game. Barlog has said that, while the show is about fighting, it is a love story.
In addition to the release date, Barlog confirmed that Kratos will be the main protagonist of the upcoming mainline game and that it will follow the same story as Kratos revealed back in June, which is connected directly to Laufey story, not having its own.
The Faye game is all of this and more,” Barlog said during the panel, “we are continuing what is been done before and preparing and building what is to come. The world-building in Laufey is “with purpose” to build for what is to follow, he added.
Nothing has been reported yet regarding the sequel of Kratos, which is scheduled to be released in the same window, in the same platform. Earlier reports suggested that Kratos would be heading to Egypt for his next adventure, which dovetails with Sekhmet role as Laufey enemy.
Kratos does briefly appear in Laufey, however, at the reveal footage end when he offers his hand to Faye. After that early week, it is uncertain how much of him fans will get to see before his home game.
Laufey will be shipping on physical discs, despite the news recently out from Sony about a plan to cease manufacturing PlayStation games on discs altogether from 2028.
The timing moves Laufey into a historically good release window for single-player games, coinciding about three months after GTA 6 releases in November, and ahead of February 2027, which looks like a busy period for games.
Now, Santa Monica Studio is simultaneously developing four God of War games: an untitled Kratos sequel, a Greek Trilogy Remake that was announced earlier this year and a live-action God of War series for Amazon Prime Video, helmed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore. It is an unusually busy and ambitious lineup all rolling out at the same time for a franchise that has not made a much noticed debut in three years since Ragnarok.
