The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has stepped up its supervision of the recently merged Ufone-Telenor company and demanded it to provide a full picture of its legal, financial, administrative and operational structure. In addition, the regulators have stated that no new brand will be available to the general public without their approval.
A formal notice was issued to Ufone as well as to the new merged Telenor company, asking them to submit all the documents associated with the new corporate structure. This encompasses all approvals acquired as a result of appropriate legislation, as well as other relevant documentation deemed relevant to the authority.
Major General (Retd) Hafeezur Rehman, Chairman of PTA, confirmed that the regulator had directed that Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML) and the merged entity would notify PTA formally after the legal merger process is completed.
He also clarified that it is legally binding for any new brand name, logo, or promotional campaign to obtain prior notification and approval from PTA. Otherwise, he said, the company would be mired in regulatory law.
These directions are not meant to be a hurdle to the merger, but are to ensure that the combined entity remains fully compliant with the legal and regulatory requirements of Pakistan telecom sector.
